Superfast Robotic Butcher Awarded Grand Prize

At the recent Fourth Robot Awards, in Japan, two industrial food-processing robots took top prizes. The first is a machine that looks downright terrifying -- just a long, sleek robot arm with a gleaming knife welded to one end. It's the HAMDAS-R, developed by Mayekawa Electric, and it's designed to remove ham bones -- a lot of them. Five hundred in an hour, this is twice as fast as a human’s capability to debone a ham.

Coming to the ER Soon: TriageBot

At the Humanoids 2010 conference held in Nashville this week a paper was presented on robotic help in ERs (emergency rooms) by author Mitch Wilkes, titled,"Heterogeneous Artificial Agents for Triage Nurse Assistance". Wilkes is the associate director of the Center for Intelligent Systems and associate professor of electrical and computer engineering at Vanderbilt University.

'I, Robot' Inspired Invention Wins Science Prize

The Siemens Competition announced the winners of its college scholarships during a ceremony at George Washington University. Six individual students and six teams of students competed in Washington after winning regional competitions in November. They presented their research to a panel of judges Sunday.

Robot That Reads

An important human ability, one of reading and interpreting text has been successfully replicated in a robot named Marge. Her creators are Ingmar Posner and Paul Newman at the University of Oxford, along with their collaborator Peter Corke at Queensland University of Technology. Marge is able to determine what a word says and what it means, effectively making an artificial intuitive leap.

Robotics Activities Come to University of Hawaiʻi at Mânoa

Students from University of Hawaiʻi at Mânoa will host the “Be A Scientist Tonight” at the Institute for Human Services on Friday, December 10, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. The event will offer hands-on activities such as robotics, fly genetics, origami and other activities and will engage some 100 children and their families.
