Asheville School’s Robotics Club Develops Robot

The team of students at the Asheville School has developed an innovative approach wherein some metallic parts can be transformed into a robot. However, assisted by the alumni and faculty they have successfully structured a For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) Robotics team.

The team was provided with knowledge and skill development sessions following its participation at the NC FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) on February 25 at the NC A&T State University campus in Greensboro, NC. This will also contribute to its successful performance in the national level.

Junior Ryan Do organized a club in October in support of the team members to construct the robot. The Robotics club received grants from the Stonecutter Foundation that will allow its participation at the FIRST 2012 competition. Prior to the competition, the members of the club became familiar with the complexities involved in controlling their newly-developed robot, in addition to preparing for the big game with crates, bowling ball and racquet balls.

According to the Technology Coordinator at Asheville School and the faculty sponsor of the Robotics Club, Charles Long, the meticulously designed robot reflected the team’s proficiency, knowledge and skill. Long accompanied the team for the Greensboro competition. With this robot affirmed to be one of the best robots in North Carolina, Ryan Do anticipates being successful even at the state level. Van Wye added that the Asheville School team’s representation at the national level competition in St. Louis will be the major motivating factor.
