Bishop Guertin High School’s Robotics Team to Participate in FIRST Regional Contest

The robotics team of Bishop Guertin High School will contend in the For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) regional robotics contest, which will be held at the Verizon Wireless Arena in Manchester from March 4 to 5, 2011. Around 350 teams across the state will participate in the competition.

Every year, the Game Committee of FIRST changes the game pattern. The contest will be held on a foot rink measuring 24 by 57 feet. The teams should develop a robot capable of holding circular, square and triangular tubes, transferring the tubes to the opposite side of the rink and suspending them on a shelf. In addition, the tubes must be suspended to replicate the FIRST insignia.

The game involves several rounds and each time three teams will be selected at random from different schools to form the ‘red alliance’. Another three teams will form the ‘blue alliance,’ and will act as the opposing alliance. The game will be concurrently performed by six robots.

The mentor of the Bishop Guertin team has mentioned that purposeful destruction of a robot is not allowed in the game. He added that it is possible that the same robot may be included in their alliance in the next round of the game. The BG team has been working intensively on its robot and it has to develop, program, analyze and ship the robot within six and a half weeks.
