MAG Industrial Automation Systems has declared that it has sold two VIPER 6000 automated fiber placement (AFP) systems to Alliant Techsystems. The AFP systems will be deployed for manufacturing F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter’s wingskins.
MAG’s systems will be included at Alliant Techsystems’ Clearfield plant. The facility already includes five VIPER AFP systems. The procurement order also includes Advanced Composites Environment Suite (ACES) software and a simulation and modular programming system. This system will be tailored with a new feature to enable programming of present equipments at the facility. The systems are scheduled to be delivered in the beginning of 2012.
Randy Kappesser, Vice President of MAG Composites, has stated that their capability of customizing the system and process for this distinct requirement was a key advantage. He mentioned that the VIPER system can offer high hamper rates with tough bismaleimide substance, helping the F-35 program to achieve cost reduction missions. He said that so far they have delivered drilling and milling systems for the F-35 program and recently they have obtained a delivery order for two AutoDrill systems from Lockheed Martin for manufacturing wings.
The Viper 6000 AFP system offers distinct control over feed, clamp, cut and re-start for up to 32 individual tows of prepreg slit tape, enabling automated "on-the-fly" alteration of the fiber band width, configuration of openings and controlled placement of fibers around changing contours. The system can handle tow widths of 3.2, 6.4 and 12.7 mm for manufacturing a maximum fiber band width of 406.4 mm/16 inches.
