For engineering senior Eduardo Moreno from the University of Arizona this summer will not be spent idly. He will spend this summer building underwater robots that will be tested and used in exploration and national defense.

Obama Announces $70 Million Robotics Initiative

President Obama has announced a $70 million initiative to accelerate the development and use of robots in the United States that work beside, or co-operatively with people. The proposal has been called the National Robotics Initiative and is backed by a number of government run agencies including the National Science Foundation (NSF), NASA and the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

William Lynn, the U.S. Deputy Secretary of Defence said that the US would strive to keep its lead in unmanned robotic technology despite the $400 billion reduction in defense spending. The cuts in defence budget are part of the Obama government’s goal of reducing the U.S. deficit over the next 12 years.

U.S Military to Lead in Unmanned Robotic Technology Despite Budget Cuts

The U.S Deputy Secretary of Defence stated that the military would continue to be the leader in using unmanned robotic technology despite cost cutting measures of $ 400 billion in the defence budget. William Lynn, the Deputy Secretary, added that the Pentagon would continue to lead in the cyber security and long-range target striking using missiles, electronic attacks and aircraft.

Kairos Autonomi Receives 5 Million Dollar Contract from the Naval Air Systems Command
