Researcher Develops Emotions-Recognizing Robot

Dr. Nguyen Duc Thanh, Faculty of Electrics-Electronics Department, HCM City Polytechnic University, has developed a robot that can identify emotions of humans.

Emotions-Recognizing Robot

The head of the robot is the core control center. It includes two camera systems and they can be moved by an in-built engine. The body of the robot features three layers and it accommodates the main board and other parts. The bottom portion of the robot includes a gear-box and three engines.

The cameras of the robot capture images of the persons located by its side and transmit them to the built-in computers for investigating emotions. It will examine if the people are glad, worried or annoyed and will respond accordingly. For instance, if the person is worried, it will go near him to soothe him.

Dr. Thanh has mentioned that the robot works on the basis of an algorithm, which recognizes and categorizes human’s emotions via facial appearance. The precision of the algorithm is around 90%.

According to Dr. Le Hoai Quoc, Deputy Director of the HCM City Department of Science and Technology, the robot can be deployed in security and aviation segments. He added that the robot will be further enhanced to utilize it in day-to-day life.
