China Creates First Spherical Robot with Retractable Hands

The Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology (MST) has announced that the country has created its first spherical robot featuring retractable hands.

According to a media report, the newly developed robot can move in all directions and has retractable arms to do tasks. The robot has enhanced mobility and environment compatibility.

Scientists at Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications carried out the research, which was funded by the government. The achievement has been certified by experts. They have received one patent for robot invention in the US and four in China.

The development of Spherical robots was started in the 1990s. They have spherical shape and use rolling motion to move around. Alterations in the robot’s centre of gravity and friction between its external surface and the ground provide a motive force to the robot.
