BUPT Researchers Develop Spherical Mobile Robot

The Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology (MST) has announced that Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications’ researchers have developed the first ever sphere-shaped mobile robot with retractable arms.

The robot can move in all directions and its telescopic hands can carry out several tasks. The robot showcases enhanced mobility and can adapt itself to the environment.

This government-sponsored project has received four Chinese patents and one US patent. These robots feature a spherical envelope and move by rolling method. The motive force for the robot is offered by the differences in the centre of gravity of the spherical casing and frictional force between ground and the robot’s outer surface.
