Good Samaritan Hospital Performs First Robotic Surgery for Hysterectomy

David C. Walters, a renowned physician at Heartland Women's Healthcare, has successfully conducted two robotic surgeries using the da Vinci system on 17 December 2010 at Good Samaritan Hospital located in Mt. Vernon, Illinois. He is the first physician in the southern Illinois region to do the innovative da Vinci hysterectomy.

The da Vinci Surgery is another choice for hysterectomy. Its three dimensional image provides enhanced visibility to physicians. It is minimally invasive, reduces pain and hospitalization period and promotes quick recovery time, thereby enhancing the patients’ quality of life.

According to Walters, technology advancements have resulted in safer surgeries and provide a number of options for women when curing a number of problems including uterine fibroids, intense menstrual bleeding, endometriosis and cancer. Walters further added that the da Vinci treatment exceeds the limitations of traditional laparoscopic surgery and provides innovative solutions for gynecologic surgeries. Till date, physicians have done over 100,000 da Vinci hysterectomies after the FDA clearance in 2005.
