GPS-Based Machine Vision Systems for Roadway Marking Wins ATSSA Award

Three companies committed to advancing roadway safety were recently awarded prestigious American Traffic Safety Services Association (ATSSA) "2013 Innovation Awards" for their creative new products used on America's roadways. The three winners were chosen from a field of 22 companies competing for the awards.

Winners were selected by a team of judges that included roadway engineers and safety experts, who visited the company's exhibits and evaluated their products or services individually that were on display during ATSSA's 43rd Annual Convention and Traffic Expo in San Diego. Since 1969, ATSSA's Traffic Expo has been the largest roadway safety exposition and convention of its kind in North America, featuring the latest in roadway safety products and services that help save lives on roadways. This year's ATSSA Traffic Expo began on Feb. 23 and concluded at 1 p.m. PST today.

The 2013 ATSSA Innovation Award winners are:

First Place: Remote Operated Safety Attendant (ROSA), an innovative flagger's tool used to control traffic from the "safe zone" out of imminent danger, verbal abuse and adverse weather conditions. Developed by Roundspring Technologies Inc., of Springfield, Mo.

Second Place: Solar Flood Warning/ReRoute System, a flood warning system that provides drivers advanced warning of flood zones by activating LED Solard Blinkersigns via water rise sense, remote switch for Central PC. Developed by Traffic & Parking Control Co. Inc. (TAPCO), of Deer Brown, Wis.

Third Place: LTS-100 and LTS-200, the first GPS-based machine vision systems for the roadway marking industry. Developed by LimnTech Scientific, of Souderton, Pa.

ATSSA members manufacture and install the various roadway safety devices that motorists pass by or utilize every day on America's roadways. Many of these safety products are taken for granted as motorists pass them, including guardrails, bright reflective signs, roadway striping, lighting, reflective garments and work zone safety equipment.
