The Instituto Radioterapia del Este located in Puerto Rico has installed the Protura Robotic Patient Positioning System of CIVCO Medical Solutions.
The Protura system improves the level of the image-guided radiation therapy by offering corrections down to sub-millimeter level with six degrees of freedom (6-DoF). The President of CIVCO’s Radiation Oncology Division, Mike Klein stated that the Protura system installed at Instituto Radioterapia del Este will improve the range of treatment technology offered in Puerto Rico. The company’s 6-DoF robotic couch drastically extends the capability for dosage optimization without affecting the neighboring healthy tissue, he said.
CIVCO Medical Solutions’ Universal Couchtop on a GE Big Bore RT-16 CT and its stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) immobilization system comprising Body Pro-Lok Bridges have also been utilized in the Instituto Radioterapia del Este. The Director of Protura Business Development at CIVCO Medical Solutions, Eric Knipf commented that this is the only facility featuring Varian's latest Trilogy linear accelerator technology and CIVCO's Protura Robotic Patient Positioning System in Puerto Rico. This allows the patients to get advanced therapies, including the new SBRT program of the center, and eliminates the requirement to go to places like Miami to get similar treatments, he said.
The Instituto Radioterapia del Este’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Carlos Remedios stated that Protura has offered more confidence and the capability to treat complex cases to the center. The frequent installations of CIVCO's SBRT immobilization packages and Protura Robotic Patient Positioning System extend their dominance in the global radiation therapy market.
