Airbus Group and Local Motors have launched a global co-creation challenge to identify the next generation of commercial drone technology.
A team of researchers from the Unmanned Aircraft Systems Research program at RMIT have observed the flight patterns of birds to build the world’s first soaring drone that remains airborne using the updrafts found around buildings. The researchers discovered this concept while working to improve the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) designs. They exploited updrafts to keep a drone airborne for five times longer than a drone driven with a propeller.
The NOC is to form part of the new Centres of Excellence in Satellite applications, which is expected to aid economic growth in the Solent region. As part of this new centre the NOC will develop the technologies to help robot-subs use live satellite data to inform their route through the ocean, not unlike drivers using live traffic updates.
Every January, the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) hosts the SciTech Conference which showcases next-generation innovations in aerospace technologies. This year, CEAS Department of Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics (AEEM) PhD students Brandon Cook, Nicholas Hanlon, Sarthak Kukreti and Anoop Sathyan presented their research papers on state-of-the-art advancements in unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technology.
Researchers from the University of Southampton have designed innovative membrane wings inspired by bats, paving the way for a new breed of unmanned Micro Air Vehicles (MAVs) that have improved aerodynamic properties, can fly over long distances and are more economical to run.
A consortium of Singaporean institutions and private sector companies including HES Energy Systems, ST Aerospace, DSO National Laboratories, and the Future Systems and Technology Directorate of Singapore’s Ministry of Defense, have worked jointly to achieve a record 6 hour endurance, 300km flight on the Skyblade 360 UAV built in Singapore by ST Aerospace.
Too bad there is no frequent flier program for microsatellites. If there was, University at Buffalo students would accrue serious points.
Just a bit bigger than a box of cereal, one of the first CubeSats to travel in interplanetary space will be NASA’s miniature space science station, dedicated to studying the dynamic particles and magnetic fields that stream from the sun.
Gas station attendant, electronics installer, home inspector: is there any fix-it job that NASA’s Robotic Refueling Mission (RRM) can’t tackle during its four-year career? As NASA takes a break in RRM operations, it’s looking back on past achievements and celebrating one of its latest accomplishments - the successful inspection of Canadarm2, the International Space Station’s (ISS) robotic arm. In time, this visual inspection capability may help future servicing ventures at other orbits inspect for damage and failures on their spacecraft.
Inside a massive clean room at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland the James Webb Space Telescope team is steadily installing the largest space telescope mirror ever. Unlike other space telescope mirrors, this one must be pieced together from segments using a high-precision robotic arm.
