Bot Squad Wins Second Prize in State Level FIRST Robotics Contest

The Bot Squad robotics team formed by 10 students from Churchland Elementary and Tyro Middle schools, has received the second prize under Innovative Design category at the state level FIRST robotics contest. The tournament was held at the North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University.

The Bot Squad is formed by students between fourth and eighth grades. Dru Davis, an Instructional Assistant for Second-Graders at Churchland and Brenda McGuinn, science and math teacher at Tyro Middle School serve as instructors for the team.

First Lego League program is meant for children between 9 and 14 ages. It includes an interactive and practical oriented research presentation conducted like a sports-like contest. It enables students to develop team work, analytical and inventive skills.

The Bot Squad team was formed four years before to enable students to develop interest in science, engineering and math for pursuing jobs in these areas.
