Dr. Hannah Ortiz, Director of Peconic Bay Medical Center’s Gynecologic Oncology Robotic Surgery Program, taught students of Westhampton Beach High School regarding the da Vinci Surgical System.
Dr. Ortiz is the adviser of the Robotics Club of the Westhampton School. She utilized a da Vinci training system, enabling students to visualize the working of da Vinci robot and also allowed students to operate it. She offered a presentation and conducted Question and Answer sessions to help students better understand the medical benefits of robotic surgery.
The 5th Grade Council, the winner of a fundraising contest for helping the Foundation for Children affected with cancer, was also present during the presentation session.
The da Vinci surgical system links robotics and computer technologies and enables surgeons to conduct robotic procedures involving minor incisions. It also involves reduced blood loss, quicker recovery, less scarring and a shorter stay in hospital. Peconic Bay Medical Center is one of the two medical centers on the east to conduct the less-invasive da-Vinci assisted surgeries.
Robot-assisted procedure is an emerging area and it significantly inspires the future medical technology.
