Honda Engineers Develop Humanoid Robot with 34 DOF

Honda engineers have developed a new humanoid robot that features 34 Degrees of Freedom (DOF) in all joints.

ASIMO Humanoid Robot

The Advanced Step in Innovative Mobility (ASIMO) humanoid robot has the ability to react to movements of human beings and identifies the terrain of the environments. The robot was manufactured at a cost of $1 million USD.

Honda engineers have worked for more than two decades to develop ASIMO. The engineers have also developed an iPhone app and a Run with Asimo smartphone to enable users to interact with the robot’s virtual version on the phone.

ASIMO was developed 10 years back at Honda’s Wako Fundamental Technical Research Center in Japan.  After undergoing refinement for 10 years, the humanoid can grasp objects, climb stairs, and walk on uneven surfaces. The robot also has the potential to recognize faces and respond to voice commands. The main motive of Honda engineers is to make ASIMO a people-friendly robot.
