IRobot Possible Contender for More US Military Orders

A recent report published on the site defensemedianetwork.com declares that the US Army is considering expanding its present order of 45 compact unmanned ground vehicles or SUGVs. These are proving to be a very cost-effective solution for the Army’s requirements.

BAE Systems has in the meanwhile declared bidding to supply the Army its ground combat vehicle (GCV). Although these are bigger in size than the SUGV, they are still closer in size to the armored fighting vehicles like Stryker. IRobot had declared in October 2010 being part of BAE’s team and that it will deploy its Aware 2 networking software to develop unmanned operation and interoperability with other unmanned devices that will be crucial for the program.

The new order is expected to be placed towards the end of 2011.  However, the BAE team faces stiff competition from SAIC SAI and Boeing BA, besides General Dynamics and Lockheed Martin.
