On the first day of the 2015 OPEN MINDS Technology & Informatics Institute, Pertexa Inc., a medical technology company based in Ridgecrest, California, made a splash with the debut of their new, versatile machine called RITA (Robotic Intelligent Telehealth Assistant).

Allowing patients to access a physician in a more efficient way, RITA provides a platform to improve and increase patient engagement. It can be used anywhere there's a need to reach out to a physician, especially in remote areas, or to augment existing services in clinics, hospitals, and other community care settings.
Made in the USA using state-of-the-art technology, RITA is designed to improve physician productivity up to 30%. Working seamlessly with Radekal, Pertexa's EMR system, RITA allows physicians to complete a full patient engagement — which includes providing a diagnosis, sending a prescription, and completing all billing for the encounter — in just 18 minutes.
According to Joshi, there are unlimited uses for RITA, including:
- Providing care for high-risk or under-served patients and those that pose challenges, such patients in rural areas, prisons, military outposts, and more
- Maximizing specialty-based care available to a larger population through the use of compatible medical devices and video consultations
- Examining patients remotely to evaluate the severity of illness or injury and determine next steps
- Coordinating post-operative care, potentially reducing readmission costs of post-operative patients by providing follow-up care remotely
