The robotic surgery lasted for five hours. During the procedure, surgeon sits at an exclusive console and while viewing the three dimensional image in a screen, he handles the robotic arms which are actually operating the patient.

Dr. Dan Dunn of Abbott-Northwestern Hospital has stated that the arms of the robot mimic the movements made by him. He mentioned that the robotic arms and its camera system move through the incisions made in patient’s abdomen. He added that after performing robotic procedure on esophagus and stomach, incision will be made in the neck to bring the stomach upwards for substituting the removed esophagus.

Once the tumor is removed, the stomach of the patient becomes smaller by 40%. The patient has to consume food in small portions following the surgery.
