New Albany Surgery Center and OrthoNeuro announced today the addition of a Navio™ orthopedic surgical system to help surgeons perform precise and accurate partial knee replacement surgeries. The Navio system helps New Albany Surgery Center offer its patients one of the most advanced surgical technologies in Ohio.
The Blue Belt Technologies Navio technology for partial knee replacements utilizes an advanced CT-free intra-operative registration, planning and navigation platform to assist the surgeon in building patient-specific surgical plans. The Navio robotic-controlled handpiece assists the surgeon in preparing the bone with the precision of robotics in a hand-held, freehand sculpting technique.
“Using the Navio system allows me to visualize my patient’s x-ray before I even begin to remove bone,” said Dr. Mark Gittins, Orthopedic Surgeon at OrthoNeuro. “Robotic-controlled smart instrumentation like the Navio allows us to very precisely resurface our patient’s knees for partial knee replacements. This precision may lead to improved patient outcomes.”
With no pre-operative CT-scan required, the Navio system integrates easily into existing knee-replacement workflows. This allows the patient to receive the benefits of robotic-guidance without additional time spent for pre-operative procedures. Instead, the surgeon registers the patient during the procedure using kinematic reconstruction and anatomic landmarks. This information assists the surgeon in planning the implant location and balancing the knee’s ligaments for a more natural feeling knee.
During bone preparation, the Navio robotic-controlled handpiece is tracked in real-time in relation to the intended resurfacing plan and is computer controlled to remove only the bone required to place the implant.
“Potential benefits to the patient are numerous,” said Dr. Gittins. “By making partial knee replacements a more accessible option through enabling very precise and predictable results, the patient has available a surgical procedure that is generally associated with smaller incisions, less scaring, a shorter hospital stay or an outpatient procedure in some cases, and quicker recovery when compared with the total knee replacement alternative.”
The Blue Belt Technologies Navio surgical system will be used in many of the approximately 300 partial knee replacement procedures performed each year at New Albany Surgery Center.
