Avnet Releases New MicroZed Embedded Vision Carrier Card Kit

Avnet Electronics Marketing, an operating group of Avnet, Inc., today released a new MicroZed™ Embedded Vision Carrier Card kit to help engineers more quickly and efficiently deploy solutions incorporating the versatile and low-cost MicroZed™ System-on-Module (SOM).

The kit builds on the MicroZed SOM by providing a video-specific carrier card, with camera connector, for optional camera modules featuring image sensors from ON Semiconductor Corp. and Toshiba America Electronic Components, Inc. (TAEC). Two versions of the kit are now available: the MicroZed™ Embedded Vision Carrier Card kit, without a MicroZed SOM, for users who already have a MicroZed SOM; and the MicroZed™ Embedded Vision Development kit, including a MicroZed 7020 SOM and voucher for the Vivado® Design Edition design suite, device-locked to the Zynq 7020.

Both the Carrier Card kit and full development kit include the hardware, software and IP components necessary for the development of custom video applications including video analytics, machine vision, medical imaging, video surveillance and advanced driver assistance systems. Optional add-on camera modules supported by the kit include ON Semiconductor’s new PYTHON image sensor family and Toshiba America Electronic Components, Inc. (TAEC) TCM3232PB full HD (1080p high-definition) image sensor. A camera design guide will also be included to help customers develop their own camera modules.

In addition, Xylon, a premier Xilinx IP provider, will make several reference designs available for the MicroZed Embedded Vision Carrier Card, including an advanced image processing solution and face analytics.

“Avnet has been at the forefront of the embedded vision movement from the very beginning, and our experience has demonstrated that modern vision applications require a mix of hardware and software in order to achieve an optimal embedded solution,” said Mario Bergeron, technical marketing engineer at Avnet Electronics. “The Xilinx Zynq®-7000 All Programmable SoC offers an ideal embedded platform for these vision algorithms. The MicroZed Embedded Vision Carrier Card leverages the Avnet MicroZed SOM, and adds video specific interfaces for fast prototyping of embedded vision applications.”

“The Smart Vision Kit represents both the first complete reference system kit developed for the industrial security marketplace using a Toshiba sensor, and our first engagement pairing one of our sensors with a Xilinx FPGA image processor,” said Andrew Burt, vice president of the Image Sensor Business Unit, System LSI Group at TAEC. “In addition, Avnet will sell this co-developed engineering kit into the open marketplace, expanding our relationship to the benefit of our mutual customers. We are excited by the significant growth potential we see for this camera in the industrial arena.”

“The PYTHON global shutter CMOS image sensor family from ON Semiconductor offers an image sensing solution that not only provides appealing levels of speed without compromising image quality, but is also configurable and flexible enough to provide simple integration across multiple resolutions,” said Thad Smith, director of the Image Sensor business unit at ON Semiconductor. “Leveraging the quality and flexibility of the PYTHON-1300 1.3 MP image sensor, the MicroZed Embedded Vision Development kit from Avnet is the perfect tool for design engineers looking to simplify and accelerate the development of image sensing solutions for multiple markets and applications.”

“Avnet’s new MicroZed Embedded Vision Development kit increased our speed to market by making it easy for us to build, integrate and validate our new smart image signal processing (ISP) pipeline and video face analytics logicBRICKS IP cores for Xilinx Zynq-7000 AP SoC and FPGAs,” said Davor Kovačec, CEO and founder of Xylon. “Based on our excellent firsthand experience, we decided to offer free logicBRICKS reference designs to users of this all-in-one kit to enable them to jump-start their new smarter vision embedded designs.”
