FIRST Receives Funding from Statoil

For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) has received a sponsorship worth $1 million from Statoil. This deal has enabled Statoil to be a Global Sponsor of FIRST LEGO League (FLL) for a period of three years.

The funding helps New Hampshire and Manchester-based FIRST to conduct robotics contests in Texas, Alberta, Calgary and Houston as well to support student teams.

It is expected that the 2010-2011 FLL season will be participated by around 170,000 children from 56 nations. Dean Kamen founded FIRST for enhancing the students’ interest in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) areas.

The organization has reported that it would obtain around $20 million funding in another five years from NASA for conducting a national robotics program.
