Aldebaran Robotics has partnered with several research organizations of France to develop Romeo Robot, an innovative adult-size humanoid. The robot will help aged and disabled people in doing their daily chores and is likely to be released in March 2011.
The company has reported that the height of the Romeo robot will be1.4 meters and its weight will be 40 kg. It can walk across all the rooms of a home and perform various activities like bringing food from kitchen, disposing trash, amusing its owner and monitoring their health conditions.
The robot will feature a backbone with four vertebral columns, articulated feet, a complex leg exoskeleton and a semi-soft torso. A new actuator type termed as backdrivable mechanism will be included in the robot. This actuator will activate the joints by turning on motors attached to screws and wires, enabling the robot to safely control its limbs. Romeo will feature 37 degrees of freedom (DOF) in which each eye include two DOF. Each foot and backbone features one and three DOF respectively.
The researchers are also working to offer interaction abilities to the robot. Bruno Maisonnier, Founder and CEO of Aldebaran, has stated that they are designing Romeo in such a way that owners can communicate with the robot using normal gestures and speech.
