ARTAS Robotic System can Selectively Harvest Follicular Units from the Scalp

Restoration Robotics, Inc., a robotic surgical company dedicated to transforming the field of hair restoration, launches The ARTAS® Robotic System; the first and only computer-assisted, physician-controlled technology to selectively harvest follicular units directly from the scalp.

More than 35 million men in the United States experience hair loss. For these individuals, hair loss can impact confidence while wreaking havoc on self-esteem. The ARTAS Robotic System was created after nearly a decade of research and development and has a proven track record in successfully treating men.

From the heart of Silicon Valley, the ARTAS Robotic Procedure is able to attract patients who previously may never have considered a hair transplant. Before ARTAS, this group shied away due to concerns regarding a long downtime, disfiguring linear scars, unnatural results or fear of pain.

The ARTAS Robotic Procedure brings a new level of speed, precision and accuracy to hair transplantation. Using high resolution imaging, the physician assisted robotic technique is able to pick the best hairs for harvesting. Each hair is removed individually, so the patient can be confident that he will have natural looking results without having to conceal a long scar on the back of his head. The ARTAS Robotic Procedure uses permanently growing hair that is not subject to male pattern baldness, so results last a lifetime.

"The ARTAS Robotic System is remarkable," says hair transplant surgeon Robert M. Bernstein, M.D. "It empowers great visual access to the hair follicles. A physician may need to perform 2,000 follicular extracts in a procedure, but because the robot selectively picks these out, the system is removing the potential for physician error and exhaustion. It allows the procedure to be completed faster and more accurately."

After rigorous testing and clinical trials, the ARTAS Robotic System earned 510(k) clearance from the Food and Drug Administration in 2011. After clinical studies conducted from 2006 to 2011 to prove the efficacy and safety of the system, it has also secured a Canadian Medical Device License, CE Mark certificate for the European Union and KFDA (from Korea) clearance in 2012.

"In hair restoration, the use of robotics through the ARTAS System has proven to go beyond what humans alone can do in the field," says Miguel G. Canales, M.D. Medical Director and Senior Vice President of Restoration Robotics. "We are dedicated to revolutionizing the way physicians and patients experience hair restoration."
