ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has been selected by China’s leading power utility, State Grid of China Corporation (SGCC) to supply high-voltage products for its 220 kilovolt (kV) smart substation demonstration project aimed at deploying and integrating intelligent solutions to enhance the efficiency and reliability of the electricity network.
It is the first time that ABB’s innovative high-voltage disconnecting circuit breaker (DCB) is being installed in China. Conventional air-insulated high-voltage switchgear consists of the circuit breaker and disconnector as separate components, which require individual installation space. The DCB integrates the function of a disconnector within the circuit breaker, thus dispensing with the need for two separate products. This saves considerable space, reduces network losses, enhances safety and improves system availability. It also helps to optimize operation and maintenance costs and lower environmental impact.
"This demonstration project contributes to China’s vision of a stronger and smarter grid that is more intelligent, efficient and reliable,” said Giandomenico Rivetti, head of ABB’s High Voltage business within the company’s Power Products division. “We have worked closely with SGCC on many global innovations over the years and are pleased to continue this tradition.”
The DCBs for this project have additional condition monitoring and other control features incorporated to provide additional ‘intelligence’ at the secondary control level, complementing the intelligence at the primary level.
SGCC, one of the world’s largest and China’s leading power utility is responsible for the construction and operation of a vast power network that covers 26 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities across a service area that represents 88 percent of the national territory.
