The International Underwater Robot Competition 2013 was held from May 25 to 27 in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province. As the sole team from Peking University, the COE sharPKUngfu team won excellent achievements of two championships and a gold medal.
Over 100 teams from 35 universities participated in the competition. The universities and institutes included not only some native ones such as Peking University, Tsinghua University and Fudan University, but also some international ones such as WestPoint Academy USA, Groningen University the Netherland and Induk University Korea.
In this year, the sharPKUngfu team is comprised of undergraduate, master and Ph.D. students from the Intelligent Control Laboratory (ICL), College of Engineering, directed by Associate Professor Xie Guangming.
“Our team has an honorable history. We have been devoted to the exploration and development of robots for many years. We started participating in the competition in 2005. From 2006, we have kept an incredible record of winning at least one championship each year,” said Liu Ao, the current team captain, who will get his master degree this year.
“In ICL, we’re creating a virtuous circle that the competition and academic research promote each other. Continuous research progress and excellent competition record should come shoulder to shoulder,” said Professor Xie.
Since the re-establishment of the College of Engineering in 2005, the sharPKUngfu Team has received great attention and support from the college. Just before this year’s competition, the team has received a financial support from an alumnus of Peking University, Zhang Jincai, who donated the team 300,000 RMB as their activity fee.
In recent years, the team has been interviewed by several state media including CCTV, Xinhua News Agency, China Education Television, China National Radio, and Guangming Daily.
