Suitable Technologies has launched Beam Remote Presence System (RPS). Beam has been specially created to allow instant travel to remote locations based on videoconferencing on a mobile platform.
The system ensures a real physical sense of presence in addition to mitigating travel costs.
The Beam Remote Presence System encompasses three components: the Beam Client Software (Client), the Beam Remote Presence Device (RPD), and the Beam Docking Station (Dock). The RPD will be adopted by the 'pilot' of a Beam RPD for communicating with 'locals' at a work setting.
Weighing 95 lb and measuring 62” high, the Beam RPD with 17" screen serves to be an individual’s physical presence in the world. It is mounted in such a way that the pilot’s face will appear at human size. It is driven by a battery which ensures eight hour-long operation and its motors can attain human walking speed of 1.5 m/s. Four wireless radios (2.4/5 GHz) provide seamless wireless connectivity, while its proprietary software controls transitions between access points. The two in-built high definition cameras offer a 170 degree wide field of view, vertically as well as horizontally. Additionally, it has a six-microphone beam that creates array for human-like audio performance, echo cancellation and background noise reduction. The LED lamps ensure operation in low light.
The Beam Client links the Beam RPD to create integrated controls for driving, audio, and video. The client can be downloaded as an installer on both Mac OS X and Windows 7. The Beam Dock acts as a power source to the RPD's battery. The pilot directs the RPD independently into the dock.
Suitable welcomes early adopters involved in businesses with knowledge workers or remote engineers. Selection of the employer can then be done based on the specific physical location. By launching Beam, specific individual features such as housing prices, family, outdoor hobbies, or local schools can be equally measured against the features of a specific career.
Suitable Technologies is a division of Willow Garage, a personal robotics company.
