Xilinx Recognized for Robotic-Assisted Surgical Application

Xilinx has declared that it has received an Outstanding Achievement award. The award was presented during the Electronic Product Design e-Legacy Awards 2012 event in London.

The company was recognized in the category of Medical Advances based on the inventive adoption of FPGAs in a minimally invasive, robot-assisted surgical application for 3D vision and accurate control in its da Vinci Surgical System by longtime client, Intuitive Surgical.

This is the sixth year for the Electronic Product Design (EPD) e-Legacy awards to honor technological innovation, and also to recognize the contribution by entrants for protecting the environment and promoting development to their own communities. EPD magazine readers voted the awards. The Outstanding Achievement award happens to be a unique category selected only by Alistair Winning, an EPD editor.

With its global deployment at 1,500 sites, the high accuracy of the da Vinci Surgical System expedites complex surgical procedures, creating rapid recovery and better quality of patient experiences compared to traditional open surgical procedures. The surgeon sits at a comfortable position and precisely maneuvers the robotic arm-equipped surgical instruments from a customized-zoom 3D view of the operating field, powered by high performance instrumentation.

An Intuitive Surgical Case Study in the Customer Innovation section at xilinx’s website and a Xcell Journal magazine article entitled, ‘Xilinx FPGAs Guide Robotic-assisted Surgical System’ represents Intuitive Surgical's inventive use of Xilinx All Programmable FPGAs.

Intuitive Surgical leverages high performance video processing bandwidth in Xilinx FPGAs for improved visualization and minimal eye strain in the da Vinci system. It enables surgeons to exploit the dual-console configurations for collaborative surgery, teaching and simulations. Using standard FPGA blocks-based modular platform design, Intuitive Surgical design team efficiently upgrades the potential of the da Vinci system.
