The chief of naval research of the Department of the Navy delivered a presentation on the vision for future maritime robotic systems along with technology challenges during the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International's (AUVSI) annual conference, on August 82012.
The Office of Naval Research's 24th chief Rear Adm. Matthew Klunder highlighted the Navy's dependence on maritime robotic systems for performing extensive missions such as to aid sailors in detecting potential threats in waters, and oceanographic research.
According to Klunder, the main objective is to promote sync between the warfighter and unmanned systems. Advancement in the development of a hybrid naval force of manned and unmanned systems will play an integral role in Naval Research’s pioneering future.
Panels of experts who represent organizations that rely on unmanned maritime systems were regulated by Klunder. Program efforts, technology shortfalls, and current operations were the key topics.
The lists of panelists are described below:
- Dr. James Bellingham - Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute's chief technologist
- Capt. Duane Ashton- Navy's program manager of unmanned maritime systems
- Retd. Navy Capt. Craig McLean- the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration's deputy assistant administrator for oceanic and atmospheric research
- Dr. Dana Yoerger- Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution's senior scientist in applied ocean physics and engineering.
ONR took part in the AUVSI's Unmanned Systems North America 2012 at Las Vegas, where it showcased and demonstrated research initiatives based on onboard planning systems for unmanned aircraft, autonomy for robotic watercraft and ground robots, and control technologies for multiple autonomous systems.
