iRobot, one of the leading providers of robotic technology-based solutions, has been presented with a $7.7 M worth order for robot upgrades from the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA).
As per the order, iRobot will supply advanced sensor suites for 248 fielded Man Transportable Robotic System (MTRS) MK 1 MOD 1 robots in addition to delivering iRobot Aware 2 software upgrades. Drawing inspiration from iRobot 510 PackBot, MTRS MK 1 MOD 1 has been designed. These deliveries are scheduled for November 2012.
Sensor arrays include the thermal camera, iWARVVS (iRobot Wide-Angle Robot Vehicle Vision System) camera, and iRobot’s UAP (User Assist Package). Capable of imaging in low light environments and having increased fields of view, these cameras ensure greater situational awareness. Through iRobot’s UAP, GPS mapping and operator control unit can have better upgrades. It also adds critical semi-autonomous features such as heading hold, self-righting, and retro-traverse to 510 PackBot. Using these significant capabilities, operators can have reduced workload with more concentration on completing the specified mission successfully.
According to Tim Trainer, interim General Manager of iRobot’s Defense & Security business unit, iRobot acknowledges Navy’s steady investment in its existing fleet of robots. With these upgrades, the troops can have better, next generation life-saving robotic technologies. iRobot’s UAP minimizes workload, enhances mission effectiveness and reduces operator exposure to hazardous environments.
So far, iRobot has supplied over 4,500 robots to global military and civil defense forces. iRobots can effectively carry out search, bomb disposal, reconnaissance, and other complex missions.
