During final presentations in Experimental Robotics, Computer Science 225A, Stanford students geared up to demonstrate their own robots on wearing their black T-shirt uniforms. The students assembled in three or four teams and demonstrated the inspirational capabilities of robots such as landing a toy helicopter, playing games, or creating arts.
Students Show Off Their Robots
Experimental Robotics is being offered as spring quarter class for students with basic knowledge on robotics. The students will design and construct their own 'bot’ at the end of the course.
The competition began with games, where one of the teams designed a robot that played snooker, while another team’s 'bot tried playing carrom.
The robot that played snooker was able to determine the best shot based on the clicks on a nearby keyboard, which was then followed by striking the ball into the pocket.
BOTicelli and RoDin robots were designed to sketch drawings and also to engrave a relief from wax. RoDin meticulously crafted the Stanford "S" logo by scraping and engraving wax with every stroke. The wax's wavy imperfections were however a challenge for the teams.
The project concluded with a robot-controlled mobile helipad. The team's challenge was to design a robot can help a remote-controlled toy helicopter to land safely on a helipad. The factors to be considered were the landing speed of the helicopter, the steady flight of the helicopter and the location at which the robot can catch it.
