Robotic Surgery Now Effective for Pediatric Procedures

Robotic-assisted surgery on the bladder base of a 7-year old child was successfully performed at Apollo Hospitals, following the damage to the child’s urethra in a road accident.

Following the accident, the child underwent both mental and physical trauma as a tube was attached to her bladder for passing urine. In 2011, she sought the medical assistance of Apollo Hospitals Chennai.

A series of medical examinations enabled the Pediatric Urologists at Apollo Hospitals to detect the year-long uncontrollable mechanism of the child's bladder that led to shrinkage of the bladder capacity. Directed by Dr. V. Sripathi, Consultant Pediatric Urologist, the medical team at Apollo Hospitals conducted a complex surgery, wherein the child’s flap of bladder muscle was shaped into a tube to function as the urethra and reached to a normal position over the vagina.

After a year following the surgery, medical examination was conducted on the child in Apollo. According to the medical examination, the patient was under the process of healing where the left ureter was kept near the bladder neck and the flow of urine was directed in reverse to the kidney. But the kidney is likely to get damaged by this reversal of flow and may lead to urinary infection. A three-hour long robotic surgery procedure was performed to bring the urine reflux to an end. The child was normal and fine after the surgery.

Robotic surgery is the latest innovative tool in the operating room. It has been considered as the favored mode of surgery by doctors as well as by patients as it has gained an overall recognition in recent years. However until lately, robotic surgery was used primarily for adults. But now, robotics has been proven successful even for pediatrics. Robotic surgery has emerged within the present age and enables doctors to save the lives of children.
