Students Compete in 2012 VEX Robotics Competition World Championship

This year’s 2012 VEX Robotics Competition World Championship at Anaheim Convention Center is scheduled to take place from April 19 to 21, 2012. This event is free to the public and will include over 10,000 participants from middle and high school and university students, globally.

Dr. Douglas D. Osheroff , Stanford University Professor Emeritus of Physics and Nobel Prize Award winner, will be present at the event. In addition, replicas of NASA’s Curiosity and Opportunity Mars Exploration Rovers will be showcased.

Hosted by the Robotics Education and Competition (REC) Foundation, the 2012 VEX Robotics Competition World Championship serves as a technology demonstration platform where 600 out of 5,000 teams belonging to VEX Robotics Competition are entitled to compete in the VEX Gateway game. The robotics creations will be presented at “The Golden State”.

Based on the VEX Robotics Design System, the competing teams constructed their customized robots prior to participation. This year’s Gateway game will take place on a 12’x12’ square field. Here, two alliances with two teams will compete against each other. Robots were controlled by onboard software programmed with 20-s autonomous period and 2-min of human-operated play. The task was to pick up colored balls and barrels using robots and placing them in circular goals mounted at different heights.

The exhibitors at the event include FutureLab- the Innovation Expo, and NASA’s popular Mars Exploration Rovers including Curiosity, which expects to land on Mars on August 6, 2012, and Opportunity, which is currently in its ninth year of Mars missions.

In addition, America’s Got Talent’s popular iLuminate will entertain and inspire the students with its vibrant performance during the final competition.
