With support from Gates Corporation, over 1,000 students from Colorado proceeded to 2012 FIRST Robotics Colorado Regional Competition, on 23 March. The Mexican and Colorado area students exhibited their robots in the Annual Regional Competition, following a six week project on designing and constructing an original robot.
For the sixth consecutive year, Gates operated as a major supplier for the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) by granting power transmission products, worth more than $500,000. The robots, which were designed and constructed by students using Gates’ products, were validated during the regional competitive games.
The regional competition took place with around 48 student teams participating at the Ritchie Center in the University of Denver. The teams were recognized for awards based on sportsmanship, design excellence, competitive play, and excellent collaboration between businesses, schools, and communities.
With an intent to promote science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) interests among students, this 21st season of FIRST Robotics Competition had 2,343 high-school student teams participating. Students from multiple countries will participate in 52 regional competitions just like the Colorado event.
On receiving a standard kit consisting of parts and instructions, the student teams entered the January 2012 competition. Gates provided power transmission belt drive systems that were included in the kit used by student teams to design and construct a programmed robot for participating in the 2012 ‘Rebound Rumble’ competition, a 2-min and 15-sec basket ball match conducted using robots.
