Titan Medical Collaborates with Columbia University for Advanced Robotic Surgical Technology

Titan Medical declared that it has signed a license deal with Columbia University for an innovative single port robotic surgery system known as the Insertable Robotic Effector Platform (IREP).

As per the terms of the agreement, the company has been granted the rights to further upgrade and commercialize the IREP’s intellectual property developed by Dr. Nabil Simaan.

IREP is the smallest system that enables single port surgery. It is capable of penetrating the body ensuring complete manipulation capabilities and imaging feedback. It includes an advanced endoscope and two versatile arms, all within one lumen. Single port surgery is conducted in various areas like trans-vaginal access, trans-anal access, trans-oral access and single port gallbladder surgery.

With IREP, the surgeons will be able to execute minimal invasive procedures through natural openings with only a single small 15 mm opening in the abdomen, in contrast to three to five openings observed with minimally invasive systems. A new standard has been achieved with its flexible compactness and excellent deployability. Its small size enables simplified mounting on the surgical bed, ensuring rapid reorientation of the patient during surgery, which other systems fail to achieve.

In addition, IREP is proficient enough to facilitate sensory information such as intra-abdominal ultrasound, force feedback and is also proved to be ideal for high precision micro-surgery, which is not applicable with other existing systems.
