Porter Robotics Offers Advanced Robots for Kidney Tumor Surgeries

The Porter Robotics Institute (PRI) offers the latest and most advanced surgical robots that can be used for kidney tumor removal. With the help of these robots, only the affected part of the kidney alone can be removed.

The Porter Adventists Hospital is one among the rare centers that incorporate advanced fluorescence imaging technology, called the Firefly.

The medical director of PRI explained that the Firefly when combined with the da Vinci Surgical system provides enhanced flexibility in kidney tumor removal. The fluorescence imaging technology provides real-time, three-dimensional visualization along with fully articulated instruments for surgeons in the da Vinci Si Surgical system. The patients suffering from nephrectomy have been operated with the combination of Firefly and da Vinci, the surgery resulted in more success when compared to other forms of treatment and were less likely to develop chronic kidney diseases. Surgeons from different disciplines will be working on the combined surgical system, which enables them to work with increased precision and control while making incisions and removing the affected parts. The Firefly provides clear markings of the tumor and identifies the surrounding blood vessels by injecting a dye that is activated under the near infra-red region. Endoscopes and cameras that have been specially designed for capturing the fluorescent images provides real-time images of the surgical area and the surrounding blood tissues.
