The Accu2i pMTA applicator, which is a percutaneous microwave needle with high power from a medical device development company Microsulis, has become the first ablation device to be used in a liver surgery using the da Vinci Surgical System.
The device has already been used by clinicians to coagulate the tissue present in the kidney, liver, bone and lung. The liver surgery using the Accu2i pMTA applicator and the da Vinci surgical system was carried out at the Mount Sinai Medical Centre, Florida by Dr. Agrian Legaspi.
The doctor used robotic technology from da Vinci to create incisions in the patient’s abdomen after which he located the zones to be coagulated using intra-operative ultrasound and direct visual reference. After locating the coagulation zones, the Accu2i mPTA needle was placed along the line that required to be cut in order to reduce the loss of blood. In this process six burns were done which lasted for two minutes each and had a power of 120 W. Three additional two minute burns at 180 W were carried out during which the lesion was cut out with very little blood loss. At the end of the operation only 5.5 cm of tissue was removed and very little blood was collected in the canister. The operation lasted for two and half hours. The Accu2i mPTA single saline needle is part of the company’s Acculis Microwave Tissue Ablation System and has the capability to deliver a frequency of 2.45 GHz. It can coagulate tissue masses that measure up to 5.6 cm within a period of 6 mins.
