The U.S. Department of Defence has awarded grants to three schools to fund robotics programs. Broad River, Coosa, and Shell Point elementary schools will be getting $518,000 worth grants for the high percentage of military families they have served.
As per the grant announcement, one in four students at Broad River and Coosa elementary schools and one in five students at Shell Point Elementary come from military families connected to service at the Marine Corps Air Station, Parris Island Marine Corps Recruit Depot or the Beaufort Naval Hospital.
Superintendent Valerie Truesdale said that they were very excited to add three additional schools to our growing robotics and animation program in Beaufort County. This brings us to a total of seven schools with grants to expand hands-on learning in math, science and literacy, said Truesdale.
Coosa principal Carmen Dillard said that the principals of the three schools plan to meet Friday to make plans for the grant. It will be used to purchase robotics kits and animation software. According to data collected each October in Military Impact forms, about 6.5 percent of Beaufort County's public school students come from military families.
