Manipal Health has launched the Manipal Vattikuti Institute of Robotic Surgery (MVIRS) at its hospital in Bangalore. The robotic surgical system, which cost Rs10 crores is the first of its kind in Karnataka. Robot Assisted Surgeries (RAS) are guaranteed to improve the quality of service and shorten the duration of hospital stay for the patient.
The MVIRS is the outcome of MHE’s partnership with Vattikuti Foundation in the U.S.A. Departments such as urology, gynaecology and oncology will make use of the new technology in operating rooms at the Manipal Hospital.
The surgical system comes with multiple robotic arms, which carry precision instruments at their tips. The RAS would serve as an extension of the surgeon’s hands by mimicking the movements of the surgeon’s hands with micro-instruments. The robotic arms are always under the surgeon’s control. The RAS offers unprecedented accuracy, vision and control. The procedure is minimally invasive and more precise when compared to conventional procedures. The robotic arms extend the surgeon’s reach and also allow 360 degree rotation. In the words of Dr. Ramdas Pai, the chairman of Manipal Education and Medical Group, the RAS opens new avenues for delivering quality healthcare and enhanced clinical outcomes. Dr. Sudarshan Ballal, the medical director of Manipal Health, regarded the quick recovery and tiny incision as advantages of RAS. He added that it can be used to treat patients suffering from numerous health problems.
