The Asian Heart Institute in Mumbai, India has acquired the highly advanced da Vinci Robotic Si Surgical System; this is the first hospital in Asia to have acquired the system. The new model of the da Vinci system comes with improved visualization through high definition three-dimensional images.
The robotic surgery is a minimally invasive mode of surgery, which can be used in a number of medical departments such as general surgery, cardiology, urology and gynaecology. Dr. David B. Samadi regards the acquisition of the system as a promising development in India and reiterated the advantages that robotic surgery has to offer to the patients. He is the Vice Chairman of the Department of Urology and the Chief of Robotics and Minimally Invasive Surgery at the Mount Sinai medical center. He is an expert in robotic prostate surgery, being involved in bringing robotic surgery to many countries.
Dr. Samadi explained that he has taken a lot of efforts to promote the usage of robotics in treating prostate cancer in the Dominion Republic by participating in TV interviews, conferences and discussions. He has also travelled to Israel many times to perform live robotic prostatectomy surgeries using SMART (Samadi Modified Advanced Robotic Technique) method, which have been telecasted on TV. He added that India adopting the technique shows its intrinsic value as an effective treatment method for prostate cancer and other diseases. Dr. Samadi has performed more than 3,300 robotic surgeries successfully and has clientele from across the world. He commented that patients have been travelling out of United States for surgical treatments due to the high costs of medical care in the U.S. He was of the opinion that such medical travel will reduce with an increase in the use of robotics. He explained that in treating life threatening disease like prostate cancer, the robotic prostate surgical procedure was complicated and it becomes important for the surgeon to learn all the procedures involved in the surgery. He concluded by saying that while choosing the surgeon, patients should look at the quality of treatment first.
