Robotic Surgeon Clarifies about Uterine Fibroids Treatment

Dr. Ramin Mirhashemi of Gynecological Oncology Associates has discussed the benefits of the da Vinci robotic surgery in treating uterine fibroids. It was reported that more than 30% of women in America are affected by this disease.

Treatment for uterine fibroids is necessary under the following conditions- heavy or unusual bleeding, profound increase in the size of the fibroid, instigation of fertility problems and presence of large fibroids which exert pressure on the nearby organs like bladder.

One of the methods of uterine fibroids treatment is Hysterectomy. But it has a major disadvantage of ruling out the possibility for a woman to conceive again. Another conventional method called open surgery can significantly create fertility issues since it leaves a scar in the uterus which is developed due to the incision made during the procedure.

According to Dr. Ramin Mirhashemi, uterine fibroids can be effectively removed by means of a less invasive uterine fibroids surgery which involves minimal complications and quick healing. He added that the da Vinci robotic surgery is preferred to robotic hysterectomy since it facilitates the creation of small incision for inserting the required tools and also a small camera for monitoring the surgery. The foot pedals and hand controls help to handle the da Vinci robot. The other minimally invasive uterine fibrosis therapies are not preferred since they also create fertility issues. He finally concluded that effective removal of fibroids without disturbing the fertility can be assured to women by adopting and increasing the popularity of the robotic surgery.

Uterine fibroids can develop either as a single tumor or in groups of different sizes, featuring smooth muscle and fibrous tissue. They may grow either inside, outside or even on the wall of the uterus. It was reported that women in their 40’s are more likely to be affected by these fibroids.
