Luna Innovations declared that it will expand its product manufacturing operations under the development and supply accord signed with Hansen Medical.
The company will persist to incorporate the shape sensing technology of Luna into the medical robotic systems manufactured by Hansen. Hansen utilizes robotics to develop products and innovative technologies for the precise control, operation, and placement of catheters and catheter based equipment.
Hansen and Luna signed a development and supply accord in December 2009, according to which Hansen received license to incorporate Luna’s fiber optic shape sensing technology into its medical equipment. Both companies are making amends to the accord to augment the budget for expansion and to increase the scope of expansion work.
The President and CEO of Luna Innovations, My Chung, stated that the extension of the accord with Hansen shows how the company is bent on the development of shape sensing technologies to improve medical procedures.
Hansen Medical’s President and CEO, Bruce Barclay, mentioned that the continued partnership between the companies can optimize medical treatments with robotic assistance and enhance the lives of patients.
Luna’s shape sensing technology offers real-time data about position measurements that enable surgeons to steer easily through the body. Developed first at NASA, Luna’s technology was designed to provide the surgeon with a precise, uninterrupted, and direct measurement of device position.
