Hospitals Adopt Robotic Approach to Perform Complex Surgeries

Urologic surgical procedures are conducted through tiny incisions with the help of robotic instruments. The use of robotic instruments inside the abdomen enables doctors to do even complex surgical procedures successfully. Two types of Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) including single incision laparoscopic surgery and robotic-assisted surgery have become popular in Urology.

Doctors have been performing robotic surgeries in Urology for the past 10 years. Robotic radical prostatectomy has been used to treat prostate cancer. Statistics show that up to 70% of radical prostatectomies are using the robotic method. Robotic surgery is also used in the treatment of vaginal prolapse, bladder cancers, kidney cancers, and adrenal tumors.

When compared to conventional laparoscopy and open surgery, robotic surgery delivers a host of benefits such as enhanced visualization, reduced tremors and allows accuracy in tissue management and analysis.

An octogenarian woman underwent a robotic radical cystectomy for muscle invasive bladder cancer. The patient suffered minimal bleeding and experienced no intra-operative problems. She left the hospital five days after the operation. The robotic procedure lowered the use of numerous pain medications. Six months after the surgery, there was no recurrence of the tumor. The robotic surgery enabled the patient to recover at a fast pace.
