Robot Block Party event featured SRI International’s ingenious Telerobotics and wall-mounting robot. The event was organized at the Volkswagen Automotive Innovation Lab (VAIL) of Stanford University on April 14.
The Telerobotics showcased by the company was its latest robotic archetype. It can be deployed to remove vehicle-borne improvised explosive devices (VBIEDs) from a remote place.
The event was organized as part of the second annual National Robotics Week (NRW). It was held by the Robotics Caucus of the U.S. Congress and major schools, associations and robotics firms. The block party was free to the public and it is one among the several events held between April 9 and 17 to display robotics all through the U.S.
Rich Mahoney, Director of the Robotics Program at SRI, stated that they are expecting to take part again in the block party where they can display their robotic technologies directly to the people. He mentioned that they showcased the novel contribution made by robotics in several sectors and they are looking forward to encouraging students to take up jobs in the robotics field.
NRW is focused on making the U.S. as a leader in developing robotic technology and also to create awareness among people regarding the present and future impact of robotics on society. The events are aimed at identifying the varying role of robotics and the capability of robots to get trained, applying robotics to enhance national security, production, energy, education, consumer products and healthcare and encouraging students to take up jobs in robotics and fields related to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM).
