Robotic Surgery has been established at the Archbold Memorial Hospital in Thomasville. The da Vinci system would decrease not only trauma for the patients but also reduce the duration of hospitalization for them.
This system would use advanced robotic technology and permit surgeons to perform operations through tiny incisions. Most of the open surgeries would now become minimally invasive surgeries. This would be of great benefit to both the patients and the surgeons who operate on them. According to Dr. Barbara Mccollum, the patient would suffer less pain as the number of incisions would be reduced.
Archbold patients undergoing gynecology, urology and general surgery would experience the da Vinci robotic system. Dr. Mccollum revealed that this system would be good for the surgeon too as it would reduce fatigue and if the surgeon did not have steady hands then the machine would handle it. To operate the machine extensive training is needed to be taken. The surgeons had to witness live surgeries and attend webinars. They also had to operate on a pig for over ten hours and learn how to use the machine on a human.
According to Mccollum, the maximum number of cases would be from gynecology patients. She disclosed that the patients’ recovery time on an average would be reduced to 23 hours from the original two days. da Vinci is being used to perform 30% of all the gynecologic and hysterectomy surgeries in the country.
