Researchers to Design Robot with Enhanced Cognitive Abilities

Researchers at the University of Hertfordshire are working on a robot with enhanced cognitive abilities to aid persons with damaged limbs to walk again.

The research team at the University's School of Computer Science, under the supervision of Dr Daniel Polani, will be working on a research project called the Cognitive Control Framework for Robotic Systems (CORBYS) aimed at developing cognitive robots. The CORBYS team has received a European grant of €780,800 for implementing this four-year research project.

Dr Polani and his team develops cognitive robots with high-level of control and synergy with human behavior. The research at the School of Computer Science is based on biologically-inspired principles and methodologies developed over the last few years.

The four year project will produce two robots for demonstration. One product of their research will be a mobile robot-assisted gait rehabilitation system with amazing learning capabilities that will be designed to optimally customize to match user requirements at different stages of rehabilitation.
