AIR 4-H Club to Participate in FIRST Robotics Competition

The Aquidneck Island Robotics (AIR) 4-H Club’s members from High Schools in Middletown, Newport and Portsmouth have been working all through the winter on the Striker Mk II, which is their entry in the FIRST Robotics Regional Competition taking place in March in New Hampshire.

They unveiled this latest robotic creation and also had a celebration at Middletown’s Undersea Collaborative and Technical Outreach Center.

Local Industry Professionals who mentor students through a mentorship program integrating Science, Math and Technology while simulating real world working conditions are brought together by AIR.

The AIR Club had to design and build the Striker Mk II within six weeks, as stipulated by FIRST. The members worked every single day including weekends. They had formed Subcommittees for the completion for the robot at its different project stages i.e. electronic, mechanical & spirit design components. The robot’s function was to play a game, LOGO MOTION where it would pick up plastic shapes and hang these shapes in a specific order on a stand. Finally, a larger robot would activate a mini robot, which would climb a small pole. This game would be participated by two teams in the competition, which is to be held in a field of dimensions 27 x 54 feet.
