A robotics team from Mountlake Terrace High School preparing for the regional contest is building a robot that is capable of running along a play field and transporting inflated plastics of different shapes such as squares, triangles, and circles.
The team is also required to design a mini-robot that can be controlled remotely to climb a 10-feet steel pole.
The team started construction of the robot on January, 8, 2011 and is expected to complete the project in a span of 6 weeks. A total of 100 teams will be participating in the regional competition to be held from March 17, 2011 to March 19, 2011 at the Qwest Field Event Center in Seattle.
Mountlake Terrace's team will be competing with more than 80 other teams from Washington. Participants will be judged based on their behavior and team effort.
The students of the robotics team are expected to present their prototypes and develop a detailed three-dimensional computer aided design of their model. In addition, students must manufacture parts, assemble the robots, program and troubleshoot using optical tracking and advanced targeting systems. The team has also hosted a regional event, the FIRST Lego League, for four through eighth grade students for building robots from Legos.
The members of the team coached the students on robotics at Cedar Park Christian Schools. The team also provided a wealth of knowledge to help students, of Shoreline and Lynnwood schools, form their own robotics teams. A mentoring program must be conducted by the team for inducting newcomers and motivating rookie teams and younger generations to participate in the robotics competitions.
