Hofstra University to Host Long Island Regional FIRST Robotics Contest

School-Business Partnerships of Long Island (SBPLI), has declared that the Long Island Regional FIRST Robotics contest will be conducted at Hofstra University’s David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex between March 25 and 26, 2011.

The contest is sponsored by SBPLI and around 1,200 high school students from 50 schools will take part in the contest.

FIRST identifies developing capability, fair conduct, team spirit and effective collaborations among firms, communities and schools. The organization was founded by Dean Kamen and it was formed with a focus on encouraging children to learn science and technology.

The teams participating in the Long Island Regional contest need to develop a robot weighing 12 pounds within six weeks. The teams are provided with a robot kit and they work with experts to make it perform the desired task.

SBPLI has announced that the contesting students are qualified to apply for scholarships worth $14 million from major firms, colleges and universities. The scholarship results will be declared at the FRC final contest in April.

Janet Anderson, President of SBPLI-LI FIRST, has stated that the FIRST robotics contest enables students to realize their vision and it also offers them new opportunities like job offers and scholarships.

JCPenney, Corporate Advocate for Positive Afterschool Programs, has mentioned that 500 high school robotics teams will receive sponsorship across the nation as they participate in the FIRST robotics contests held during this spring.
