Team B-Cubes from Surfside Middle School bagged the first prize in the FIRST Northwest Florida Regional Lego League robotics contest. The theme given to the teams was bio-medical science.
The students are supposed to take up a medical issue and should develop and program an autonomous robot to fix the problem. In the project phase, teams should present their solutions to the problem in front of a panel of judges.
The contest was participated by 16 teams and 3 teams represented Surfside middle school. Kathy Jones, Event Coordinator, mentioned that the contest exposes students to several branches of engineering like biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering and electrical engineering. She added that the event also makes them realize the opportunities offered to them by stem fields.
The teams were judged based on four criteria including teamwork, project presentation, technical aspects and performance of the robot. Several technologists, mathematical experts and engineers served as judges for the contest. The top six teams will attend the state robotics contest, which will be held in Melbourne on February 27.
