Evana Automation Specialists, a subsidiary of Phillips Service Industries (PSI) and leading Systems Integrator and builder of custom, automated assembly and test systems, is building the fifth and sixth of seven custom assembly and test systems, based on a multi-year contract, for a Tier 1 automotive supplier.
The systems, which simplify the production of automobile steering assemblies, provide three main functions: The first function involves the assembly of a ball nut. During this process, the bearing is assembled to the ball nut, Loctite is dispensed to the threads, and the spanner nut is assembled and secured using a DC driver. The second function involves assembling the ball nut to a rack. This process includes gauging the rack and ball nut, selecting ball bearings and loading them into the assembly, where the two components are mated and checked for lash. The third function involves complete noise, vibration and functional testing of the final assembled part. Upon successful testing, the assembly is coated with an anti-rusting agent.
Overall, the Evana systems offer complete component traceability, process data collection of torque values, ball selections, part measurements, lash readings, performance data and test readings. All of this data will be tagged to the serial number of the final part and saved in a database for future accessibility. Delivery of the two systems, which are going to a manufacturing facility in Poland, is scheduled for December 2014.
"These custom assembly and test systems have been very productive for our customer, in multiple factories throughout the world," said Randy Wire, general manager of Evana Automation Specialists. "We are very proud to be their automation partner."
